Role of the Host

We have introduced the role of 'Host' to share responsibilities and ensure that demonstrations and events run well. This is a quick guide to the key tasks involved in this role.

1. Please set up the room in advance. Ensure you have help from a fellow member or another person to clear tables and set out the chairs in a suitable arrangement.

2. Check on hospitality supplies. There should be enough tea, coffee and sugar but you will probably need to purchase milk and biscuits. Reimbursment will be made from the petty cash.

3. Give the vote of thanks to the visiting artist at the end of the evening.

4. Co-ordinate chairs being stacked up again and tables set out.

Painting in Easthaven

Carnoustie Art Society will be holding two painting days on location in Easthaven from 10am to 3.30pm on Tuesday 23 July and Saturday 3rd August. Easthaven is one of the earliest recorded fishing communities in Scotland dating back to 1214. As it celebrates it’s centenary in 2014 we have agreed to make Easthaven a special focus of our work in 2014 exhibiting work at the village summer event as well as in our November exhibition.

Holding two painting days in the village during the summer this year will provide an opportunity to start working on pictures for 2014 and will provide an enjoyable day out. Refreshments will be available at Rockville, Easthaven throughout the day though you may wish to bring a sandwich for lunch time if you want anything more substantial. Toilet facilities will also be available in addition to space for cleaning materials etc.

Clearly the painting days are weather dependent as it really does need to be dry. However, if it does rain we will reschedule.

Everybody welcome for either one or both days

Happy New Year to you all - I hope you have had a really good time over the festive period. It hardly seems any time since we had our get together with the Christmas Card Competition - the worthy winners were 1 Wendy and 2 Gail - well done both. We as usual had a festive evening with all the wine, crisps and remnants of the Exhibition refreshments well and truly finished.
Well next we have our “Restart After Christmas Lunch” on Thursday, 17 January 12 for 12.30. This is to be in the Kinloch Hotel this year at a cost of approx £16. When you arrive you will be asked what your choice is from the menu. Please put £16 in an envelope and hand it to myself (rosie) there may be a slight change to the cost but this can be sorted out on the day. The names of those who have indicated that they are coming to the lunch are: Doug, Judy, Margaret D, Irene, Nancy, Shiela McL, Evelyn, Ron (2),Wendy, Rosie, Mike, Pat, Lesley, Shiela S, Freda, Ed, Meg, Rena, Gwen, Jean, Cecilia, Pauline, Richard G.
If you name is not here and you would like to come please phone me by Sunday 13 January, (864301) also if you are not to be able to come please let me know by this date.
The 2013 session will start on Tuesday 15 January at the usual time (7.00). We now have new heaters on the wall which should heat up the room quicker. The Watercolours beginners session will start on Monday 14 January. Remember you can use the room at any time you wish.

Our demos and workshops have been well supported so far, so keep coming along as we have some really interesting topics coming along - Frank MacDiarmid (cartoons/caricatures), Arthur Allan from Glenrothes on his way with Acrylics, Sylvia Troon (Puppeteer and Storyteller), Rikkii Craig, (pastels) and Ian Ritchie. So please come along and support these artists.
Remember that the only way to attend Workshops is by putting your name down on the list in the clubroom -
12 is maximum with reserves. Also remember if you cannot attend you will be liable for the £10 fee. So try and get somebody to take your place if possible.
There are a few changes to the syllabus for the coming session these being -
Workshop - A Allan - this has been changed to Saturday 23 March (was 30th)
Workshop - Ian Ritchie - date should read 18 May (not 16th)

Val Shuff has agreed to hold a Portraits Workshop on Saturday, 9 February. You can bring along an image of your own to paint using whichever medium you prefer. She will advise how to start , etc.
Remember our Theme Night on 28 February - the painting to be in the style of David Hockney.
We will try and fit in a Fun night sometime - subject unknown!!
As many of you know Val Shuff donated a beautiful painting for us to raffle at the Exhibition. We have however decided that it would be nice if this could be raffled within the Society. The raffle will run from the Restart Lunch until the AGM - the single ticket will be £1, and you can buy as many as you would like during this time. Tickets will be available at demos and workshops when the picture will be on show.
If you would like an additional workshop with Douglas Roulston please put your name on the list on the notice board - this would be a date to be arranged in June.
We will again be taking part in the Open Studios - information on notice board nearer time

Member raffle - painting by Valerie Shuff

Portrait by Valerie Shuff. Oils.

Valerie Shuff recently provided an evening demonstration at the Society of her wonderful portrait paintings in Oils. Valerie is quoted as saying, "I am influenced by the dramatic and powerful effects of light on face or figure.  There is something mysterious and mystical about the figure emerging from, or sinking into the shadows.  In chiaroscuro painting, the eye follows the light.  The light gives a picture its flow.  It takes the eye from one place to another and the shadows give structure to the painting.”

We were thrilled when Valerie very generously donated one of her beautiful paintings (see inset) which she suggested we might wish to raffle at our exhibition which was current at the time. However, in order to ensure that the picture is fully appreciated and achieves maximum funds we have decided to hold a member only raffle which will run from 17th January 2013 until our AGM in May 2013. Tickets are only available to members and cost £1 each
